Magnesium fluoride windows (MgF2) are birefringent crystals. They offer high hardness, strong resistance to mechanical and thermal shock, and excellent transmittance in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared bands. They are widely used in lasers, infrared optics, ultraviolet optics, and high-energy detectors. They exhibit particularly good optical properties in the ultraviolet band, making them the only known optical crystal with a UV cutoff band. They also exhibit high transmittance and minimal fluorescence emission, making them ideal materials for ultraviolet photodetectors, ultraviolet lasers, and ultraviolet optical systems.
