Sapphire is the second-hardest crystal after diamond. Due to its high structural strength, sapphire windows can be made much thinner than other common windows, resulting in higher light transmittance. Uncoated, the transmission range is 330-5500nm. Sapphire windows are available with optional visible, near-infrared, and infrared antireflection coatings, covering a range of 350-5000nm.
